The hidden dangers of auto safety technologies

by | Dec 27, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident in Buffalo, you might suspect that the other driver was using a mobile phone behind the wheel. After all, surfing the internet or texting while driving can be extremely dangerous. Distracted driving accidents linked to smartphone usage have risen dramatically across the country, causing catastrophic injuries and taking lives. While the majority of campaigns and legal changes to clamp down on distracted driving have primarily targeted mobile phone users, these devices are not the only cause of distraction. In fact, some technologies that automakers use to improve safety may actually lead to additional crashes.

Automated technologies can lead to distraction

New vehicles often contain technologies derived from ongoing research to produce self-driving cars. These systems are intended to make vehicle operation easier and safer, helping drivers to avoid preventable car or truck collisions. Lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control allow the car to manage its distance from other vehicles as well as keep the driver in their own lane. However, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers rarely use these systems as intended. They treat the technologies as if they were fully autonomous, producing even more distracted and negligent driving.

Drivers must remain alert

AAA urged greater driver education to reduce the risks associated with the technologies. The organization noted that drivers must always stay alert and aware behind the wheel. If they fail to do so, they are putting other drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk of serious injury. While these technologies can help to maintain a safe following distance and prevent drifting from lane to lane, they are not a substitute for paying attention to the road ahead. Drivers who take their minds and eyes away from their tasks may be unable to respond to sudden changes or emergencies.

A car accident can leave you unable to work, dealing with growing medical bills and suffering with the painful aftermath of your injuries. If you have been injured in a crash due to another driver’s negligence, a personal injury attorney may help you to seek compensation for the damages you have suffered.
