Tips to increase safety when crossing a street

On Behalf of | Aug 23, 2023 | Pedestrian Accidents

Taking walks can help promote a healthy lifestyle, but it is important to be aware of dangerous situations, particularly when you cross a street. Many motorists practice safe driving, but some do not and may not see you until it is too late to avoid hitting you.

If you have to cross a street, there are ways to do so while protecting your safety and minimizing the risks of an accident.

Seek out a crosswalk

You should find a crossing location where drivers are more likely to be looking for you, such as a crosswalk. Here, you should find a painted path across the street for you to cross. An intersection is another place where pedestrians may attempt a crossing since traffic signals could be available to stop traffic.

Also be aware of any turns a car could make at the intersection. You do not want to be in the path of a turning automobile as you cross the street.

When there is no crosswalk

In the event you cannot find an intersection or crosswalk, it is still possible to cross a street safely, but you must take precautions. Check the traffic flow and watch for when it comes to a halt. Find a location where there is sufficient light so that you can spot vehicles and drivers may see you.

Additionally, make sure your view of the street is as open as possible, with no vehicles blocking your sight. This can help you avoid stepping into unexpected traffic.

Taking appropriate caution near busy streets could save you from a disabling or even deadly injury. Still, drivers have their responsibilities to watch for pedestrians and can be liable for injuries in an accident.
